holidays

I dislike the holidays. Well, that's not entirely true I love the actual holidays and spending time with family, and the fact that I don't have school, but I hate the fact that I don't get to tumble for two whole weeks! I'm excited for this comp season comming up in January! I'm so happy that I can pick up an extra day of tumbling! Merry late Christmas and happy early new year!

quote #169

"Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn't matter to me.
Going to bed at night saying we've done something wonderful...
that's what matters to me."

-- Steve Jobs

I found this quote and I think it is very true. No matter what you do, make sure it is wonderful. Which reminds me not to procrastinate, a problem I have. But I am getting better!

Coming "home"

So I'm sitting on my bed this fine Thursday morning and once again, I'm sick :/ ya, this is dot my favorite way to be spending my day but that does mean I get to catch up on some things I have neglected recently, like blogging! I have been super buisy this past little while and I have learned some things, for one, I'm a procrastonator. But only with school and only certain classes. I have learned that if you procrastonate you miss opportunities and you feel stressed and all you want to do is crawl in a hole and hide. I learned that tumbling really is the place for me and that as I may be good at theatre, and that I love it, my first love is tumbling and always will be! Tumbling has been hard and I have missed many days due to my procrastonation, and that makes it hard when I do tumble to tumble well. But I learned one quote to be very true, and that's "a bad day at tumbling is way better than a good day at school." -unknown recently, I have learned to LOVE coaching. I have always liked it, except when my 3 year olds are naughty, but recenly I have had 4 of my 8 year olds learn their backhandspring by themselves! It's amazing for me to see that and remember that a couple of years ago that was me, and look at were I am now. And it's amazing to know that I had an inpact on their tumbling, as well as their lives. I know that I remember all of my coaches and would just like to thank them for the impact they have had on my life! I would be nowhere without you! I would also like to thank my team mates for always being there for me! No I'm not allergic to tumbling (laquesha! Haha) and I really miss it! Sadly I wont go today because once again...I'm sick :/ I'm super duper excited for comp season this year and I. Love all of you! My coaches, my team mates, and my students, and also my parents for making all of this possible! I'm coming back don't worrie!

Quote #166

"Life is too short. Grudges are a waste of perfect happiness.
Laugh when you can, apologize when you should and let go of
what you can't change. Love deeply and forgive quickly. Take
chances. Give everything and have no regrets. Life is too
short to be unhappy. You have to take the good with the bad.
Smile when you're sad, love what you got, and always remember
what you had. Always forgive, but never forget. Learn from
your mistakes but never regret. People change, and things go
wrong but always remember... life goes on!"

Quote #158

"There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great and no
tonic so powerful as expectation of something tomorrow."

-- O.S. Marden

As most of you know I competed at the J.O. National Championships this summer. But to go to nationals you have to qualify at either State or Regionals. I didn't qualify at state but I did at regionals. After state I wAs heart broken because I knew how hard it is to qualify at regionals. But that small hope that I had made me work harder. It made me want to go even more. When regionals came around I had the number 53.2 written on my wrist hidden under my leotard. The couple of weeks before I would look at that every day with hope I would make it. In the end I qualified bu 2 tenths of a point! I know I couldn't have doneit without hope and the support of my friends, family, team mates, and coaches.

quote #147-157

Okay so lately I've been thinking about what I can better do with my quotes and how I can better personalize this blog. I feel as if I'm taking quotes written by other people and none of it is coming from me so I decided I would comment on each one telling you how I feel about the particular quote and how I interpreter the message given. Thanks for all the loving support!
-Whit
#147
"No one is in control of your happiness but you; therefore,
you have the power to change anything about yourself or your
life that you want to change."

-- Barbara de Angelis

To me this means we are in control. We may not be in control of our surroundings, the people around us, or the situations we are going through but you are in control of how you react and how you react directly reflects in your happiness. We all need to look at life a little better. Stop and spell the roses from time to time and learn to accept others. This will make your world a better place.

#148
"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken."

-- Oscar Wilde
Don't pretend to be something your not. People will like you for who you are not for what someone else is. Let other peoples actions inspire you and learn from other peoples mistakes but be yourself and you will go far.

#149
"Great achievement is usually born of great sacrifice, and is
never the result of selfishness."

-- Napoleon Hill

With tumbling I have seen athletes who are hard workers and are always in the gym giving 110% these athletes aren't always the most talented but usually go farther than the ones who walk into the gym with amazing talent but don't know how to work hard. These athletes usually reach a point where something doesn't come easy and they don't know what to do. This is the time where hard work beats talent. And this goes perfectly into the next quote (#150)I got from a team mate of mine.

#150
"Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard."
--Unknown
Speaks for itself. This is one of my favorite quotes I first heard from one of my team mates. Work hard and you will go far.

#151
"There is but one success -- to be able to spend your life in
your own way."

-- Christopher Morley

My mom has always said "If you ever stop loving the sport you can quit. You don't have to do anything you don't like." At one point I was taking tumbling with my little sister, Danielle, we both joined the comp team and we went to our first competition and I was loving it! But my sister wasn't. Shortly after Danielle was on the trampoline and broke her finger doing a backhandspring and rejoiced because to her that meant she didn't ever have to go back to tumbling again. I love tumbling but I see in other people who are forced to do it by their parents who don't see it as much fun. A couple of months ago I was spotting my other little sister, Mikall, she wasn't cooperating when I told her she had to do it but when my mom told me to make it so that she was the one deciding she wanted to do it it worked so much better. Parents, let your kids decide what they do and don't live your life through them. They will have abetter time and It will be easier for them as well as you.

#152
"You're never too old to become younger."

-- Mae West
Often times in the gym my older team mates say "I'm getting to old for this" but then I see my coach Steph who is in her thirties and has had two kids doing amazing things in the gym and competing against teenagers and winning shows that its not how old you are its how hard you work.

#153

"This art of resting the mind and the power of dismissing from
it all care and worry is probably one of the secrets of energy
in our great men."

-- Captain J. A. Hadfield
Athletes who learn the ability to stay calm and focused during competition generally make less mistakes.

#154
"Attempt easy tasks as if they were difficult, and difficult
as if they were easy; in the one case that confidence may not
fall asleep, in the other that it may not be dismayed."

-- Baltasar Gracian
I love this quote and how it helps you keep your confidence at all times

#155
"To err is human, but when the eraser wears out ahead of the
pencil, you're overdoing it."

-- Josh Jenkins
Learn to be consistant.

#156
"In the business world, the rearview mirror is always clearer
than the windshield."

-- Warren Buffett
as is in the sports world.

#157
"Find something you're passionate about and keep tremendously
interested in it."

-- Julia Child
Stay interested and work as hard as you possibly can and to achieve your goals and you will go far and have a good time doing it.

Nationals 2011-Home Sweet Home

Hey Guys! So Its Saturday and I came home from San Antonio, Texas for the US J.O. National Championships yesterday! I haven't given any update on that so I thought I'd go through my week in Texas in order to give you a taste of my Nationals experience. Lets start with Saturday July 9th
Saturday- Our flight was canceled but we got another one for a little bit later in the day. Everything went fine with that flight and we where on our way to Texas!
Sunday- As most of you know I am a strong believer in the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints. Or in other words I'm Mormon. I love the gospel and strive to do whats right. In our church we believe that we should keep the sabbath day holly. In the for the strength of youth pamphlet  it says that we should not participate in athletic events. I have never tumbled on Sundays but I had never really been in a situation like this. Sunday we had our open workout where we got about an hour to tumble to get used to the equipment we would be competing on. This was also our only workout of the week. I decided I wasn't going to tumble and that I would sit out the workout. And I'm proud of my decision. We got up early and went to church then went to the freeman coliseum where I watched my team mates tumble. It was one of my favorite days of the week.

Monday- Competition Day! So I competed on Monday along with many of my team mates. We got where in the gym early and didn't leave until it was very late. Over all I did good for my first year. I placed 10th in my flight and 28th over all. I hit clean passes but I am new to this level and my difficulty still isn't as high as the other girls so this was a good meet for me. We spent all day at the competition watching each other compete. This was a fun but exhausting day.

Tuesday- Tuesday morning I went to the towers of the Americas with my parents then Another day at the coliseum because it was another competition day but not for me. Some of my team mates competed on Tuesday so we spent another long day at the gym. At night there was level 9 and 10 finals that we had a couple of my team mates compete in. That was fun and It was fun to cheer for my team.

Wednesday- Wednesday we had the march in and regional all start competition at night. We went to the mall and to the river walk, We also went to the Alamo then to the coliseum. We had 3 people from our gym competing for our little region 1. It was fun to cheer for our team even though we came in last place. BUT our team did the best we have ever done and we took 2nd in women's tumbling.

Thursday- 6 Flags Day!!! Thursday we spent the day at 6 flags and had a blast! My favorite ride was Super Man. Thursday was our last night in Texas. We went to the Hard Rock Cafe where my coach, Lance, gave me a hard rock tour and told me stories about things we found in the restaurant. It was a fun day.

Friday- Home Sweet Home! Friday morning we flew home where we get to jump back into our normal lives with a new enthusiasm for tumbling. I can't wait to get into the gym on Monday!

So that's my Nationals experience! It was super fun! thanks for all of the people who helped me with fundraisers and who gave me donations It really helped and I'm proud to say I payed for almost all of it by myself! It was a blast and I can't wait until next year when Nationals is in Long Beach, California!!!

quote #124

Fate loves fearless... the bottom line is you can't be afraid to fail.
~ Jerry Colangelo

my feat

There once was a time when something scared me more than anything had every scared me before. It scared me more than Spiders or Sharks. It scared me more than tornadoes or plane crashes. So lets just say I was terrified. and everybody knew it. You want to know what this fantastically terrifying thing is? Its the pit. I know what your thinking "how can you be scared of the pit. It's foam." But it wasn't the foam that scared me. It was the long drop into the foam and the fact that I had seen many people smack their face on the end of the floor going into it. I refused to go in. My teammates would joke around and say "hey Whit lets go play in the pit." I would literally say "no way" and hide behind the red double mini as if they where going to try and pull me in. It came to a point where I really needed to get over this fear so my coach came up to me and told me I was going to get over it. I told him I didn't want anyone to see because I knew tears would be involved. I come to open gym every week and open gym is from 8:30 to 9:30. He made a deal with me that if I would work hard he would stay after with me and help me do pit. So it was Me, my coach, my dad, and one of my team mates at about 9:45 at night in a silent gym. The last kids had just left and it was my turn. yay me! I stood at the end of the spring board shaking. I couldn't get my self to do it. It was if I was frozen and something had taken over my body. My coach, my dad, and my team mate yelling encouragement from the end of the floor. I tried to believe them but I couldn't. All they wanted me to do was round off, backhandspring, back tuck. Which I had been able to do on the floor for about 3 years and could do it in my sleep. I stood there at the end of the mat as tears started to roll down my face. I had never cried in the gym before. It took me about 45 minutes to move. By the time I did everybody was cheering. I did round off-backhandspring-stop. I tried that again and again. It was as if there was something that made it as if I couldn't go any farther. Eventually my coach just threw me in as my arms and legs flailing every which way. That was enough for that day. We where all tired and wanted to go home. My coach made me do 100 sit ups for not going in and sent me home. The next week the exact same thing happened only with more sit ups and some push ups started to join the party. This happened for a few weeks when one day I went for it. My body feeling like lead as I ran down the spring board. My coach doing most of the work for me but I did it! Now I know what your thinking. I was over my fear and we all lived happily ever after right? wrong. As I climbed out my face looked as if I had seen a ghost. My coach told me to do it again and once again It was round off backhandspring stop. This continued for a while. Sometimes I would go in but not often. When one day I found the poem titled "the beast" (http://eatsleeptumble.blogspot.com/search?q=the+beast)  the line "they set and they go they don't stop to think" repeated in my brain over and over again. Then all of the sudden I was in the pit!!! then I got out and did it again! Now I do pit every week and can do my double back tuck! I love the pit. I had it in me all along I just needed something to bring it out of me. So thanks to my amazing coach, my team mates, and my dad who stood by my side and pushed me along. You guys are amazing and I couldn't do it with out you.

something more

Okay so I decided that I need to do more with this blog than just quotes and YouTube videos. I was thinking about how I would do this and thought It might be better if I put more of my life into it. It seems when you read this blog that all I ever do is tumbling. I do LOVE tumbling and I do it a lot but it is not my entire life. I want this blog to reflect me and my tumbling. Don't worry I will still post just as many quotes and YouTube videos so this will still be the best place to find gymnastics inspiration. Thanks to all who read! I love you guys!

catching up

Okay so update on me. I have qualified for the US National Championships! I hurt my back last week then went to the chiropractor and its all better now. :D I took a tumbling break this week to attend EFY which stands for Especially For Youth where I went from 9 in the morning to 9 at night Monday through Friday and learned more about the gospel, strengthened my testimony, made some amazing friends {love you guys}, and got a fantastic sunburn {well not so fantastic}. So now I am home trying to catch up with what has happened in the world while I've been gone. Next week I have Youth Conference which is another LDS camp. So now is basically a time of preparation. Preparation for Youth Conference and preparation for the US National Championships. I'm at an exciting point in my life and am having an amazing summer. Thanks to all those who have made it amazing! I Love you guys! <3

10 DAYS LEFT UNTIL UTAH STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!!
The race to the finish line begins as we complete our final preparations for state. 10 days is it. 10 days is all we got so lets make the best of it. LETS GO FLIPSIDE!!! Okay so for an update from me. Well, 10 days until state! yay! I can't wait! For my passes on floor I will be competing
W-W-4-Pike (shoot out) and
W-W-4-Full
I can't wait and I am super excited about the cool T shirts my team is making. (I will do a tutorial on how to make them so you can use them for your sports teams if you want.) I will have the number 53.2 in my head. This is the score I have to get to qualify for nationals. This is the score that will get me to the goal I have been pushing towards since last year. Its the magic number. So with that we have to PREPARE, PREPARE, PREPARE. Work as hard as we can and pray everything will go as planned. I LOVE MY TEAM! and I love to tumble!

gymnastics poem #2

Patience is a man's greatest virtue,
or so the saying goes.
A gymnast must have said it,
for a gymnast surely knows!
That in this funny sport of ours,
discouragement runs high.
And even the very best will find
this virtue has passed us by.
When hands are ripped and throbbing,
when every muscle's sore,
will a gymnast still have patience
to limp in the gym for more?
When you've lost old moves
and progress seems slow,
will you still have faith in better days,
and not feel sad and low?
Can you admit your frightened,
yet not give in to fear?
Can you conquer pain and frustration
and often even tears?
When someone else does something,
you've tried so long to do...
can you still be happy for her,
or just self-pitty for you?
And when success seems far away,
your efforts all in vain,
can you force yourself to wear a smile
and disregaurd the pain?
If despite the pain and tribulations,
you can say "I won't give in"
Maybe some day you'll discover
that its now your time to win

gymnastics poem

The Beast
Homework is done, time to get in the car
Back out of the driveway, the gym’s not that far
Heading down the road, my stomach’s in a knot
What group will I have, do they know I need a spot?
Slouching in the back seat, staring out into space
I used to be excited, but now that’s not the case
Mom interrupts, “let’s go honey, we’re running a bit late”
I snap out of my trance, not feeling too great.
Walking through the door, my palms feeling wet
Nodding at some friends, stretch hasn’t started just yet
Put my bag in the cubby, then on the floor to run,
My eyes glance at beam, this wont be much fun
You see I’m level 7 now and struggling with a new skill
I’m not even 12 years old, but I feel over the hill
It’s the back handspring on beam that’s dragging me down
Haven’t smiled in weeks, have a permanent frown
The groups have been split, level 7’s to BEAM
It could not have been worse, it’s like a bad dream
As we walk on over, I stare at the beast
Of all the events, I love you the least
Coach’s eyes meet mine, “go warm up your back”
“What a great opportunity, to get you on track”
Does he know that I’m scared, having a panic attack?
I have the desire, it’s the courage I lack
It’s my turn to go, I’m trying not to cry
My eyes feel wet, my throat is so dry
As I climb on the beam, my mind filled with fears
I set to go and….get nothing but tears
As a tear hits the beam, I’m in a frozen trance
My heart wants to go, my mind says no chance
Coach says “get down, let me explain something to you”
“When level 10’s are afraid, this is what they do”
“They SET and they GO, they don’t stop to think”
“Their arms go up, they jump back in a blink”
“They tighten their mind, if they hesitate they know”
“The fear will get in, then they just won’t go”
“Use your natural ability, you’ll know what to do”
“You have to trust yourself, as much as we trust you”
“Take a deep breath, and so there’s no misunderstanding”
“The only thought you should have, is to stick your landing”
Back up on the beam, moving kind of slow
My mind starts racing, then I hear “Set…go”
Wipe my hands on my legs, raise my arms over head
This is the moment I always freeze, but this time, instead..
I flew up, arched back, my hands hit just right
As I fly over, I push hard and I fight to stay tight
And in an instant, and to the amazement of all
I had done a back handspring, I did not fall!
My teammates are all cheering, from coach a warm smile
I stuck it, I stuck it, I’m staying up here a while!
So the beast is gone, and now I love beam
It was in me the whole time, or so it would seem
Even though “SET…GO helped me, to get over my fear
There was something special, that I needed to hear
I knew all along, what I was supposed to do
But what really gave me courage, were the words “We trust you”

quote #76 & why it is important to me

"I was visiting the kindergarten that day and I saw two little six-year-olds playing in the courtyard during the recreation period. They where running and jumping around, pretending they were gymnasts. Then the bell rang, and they ran into the school with all the other little girls and I lost them. I know I would never leave that school until I found those two little girls. I went into each class of that kindergarten looking for them. I went through twice without seeing them. The third time around I asked each class 'who loves gymnastics?' In each class a few of the little girls would raise their hands. But in one class two of them sprang up and shouted, 'We do! We do!' and I had found them. One was Nadia Comaneci. The other one is now a very promising ballerina."
-Bella Karolyi

Okay so Today I was in the Library researching Nadia Comaneci for a research report. I was looking in the encyclopedia and came across this quote by Bella Karolyi about how he first found Nadia Comaneci. When I read it I instantly fell in love because that sounds exactly like me and one of my very best friends, Emma, who as little kids we choreographed our own floor routines and performed them for talent shows. Once we got asked who choreographed them for us and they where shocked when they found out we did it ourselves. Emma is now a Ballerina and I am a Gymnast so this is a really cool quote for me.

Level 8...Finally

So I am finally moving up to level 8 on floor! YAY
I don't think I posted about my last meet and what happened. Okay so at the last meet on floor I did some of the BEST passes I have ever done. My coach came over and told me I had it in the bag. He said there would be no way I wouldn't get first. My other two coaches also told I had first. I was extatic thinking I had gold. I go to awards. 3rd. Ya I know shocking right? I was shocked too. I went over to my coaches and they said they thought there was a mistake. One of my coaches headed over to the judges. He was like "why didn't she get first?" and they where like "What?! she didn't? that's weird because she did the best out of her group." After a while of talking and looking at deductions they decided they must not have judged equally. For one of my deductions they took 3 tenths for each skill but the girl who got first did the same thing only had 2 tenths deducted from each pass. So you are probably wondering if they fixed it and gave me a gold medal. Well the answer to that is no. Because It wasn't an adding mistake they couldn't change it. They said they where sorry and for my coaches to tell me that they think I should have got first to. This same thing happened at my meet before this too so they told my coaches they should move me up and get me out of this group so that this doesn't happen anymore. That's all good with me! So I am happy to say I am NO LONGER competing level 7 and am moving up to level 8 at my first level 8 meet on March 26th so wish me luck!

Okay so my translation of this is you have a big goal like lets say in my case make it to the Jo. National Championships for you it could be bigger or smaller. You don't try to do it all in one day but use it as a guide and motivation to get you where you want to go. Focus on right now and don't try to be Regional Champion before you are state champion, and don't try to be National champion before you are Regional champion. Take it one step at a time with your big goal always in mind.

quote #68 + update

okay so I haven't posted in a while so here is an update on my life and what I am doing as far as tumbling goes. I am working on moving up to level 8 on floor! yay! I can't wait! I am changing one of my doube-mini passes (L7) to the spotter backtuck front tuck instead of the spotter pike jump tuck barani because it scores better. I still have my mind set for Nationals in San Antonio, Texas this summer. Oh and just in case you didn't hear, Region 1 championships have been moved to Utah!!! I was super excited for them to be in Portland, Oregon but this way it will be cheaper for me. :D So overall I am having a good time tumbling and hope you are too!
